I choose educational sociology because it was the most relevant subject to my topic. The subject heading was educational sociology and it gave me 249 entries. After examining, I had more results with the subject heading than the keyword search. I had only one result for the keyword search compared to the subject heading. I personally think that the keyword search was more relevant than some of the subject heading results. One of the results was the same single result I received on the keyword search. The first few results for the subject heading were relevant to my topic but I think the keyword search result was more on target. I think the reasons being that the results for the subject heading were not very clear. They did not really give much information on what the particular result was about and the keyword search result gave exact material presented in the book.


B. The difference between a keyword search and a subject heading search is that when one does the keyword search it broadens the topic within the keywords used whereas the subject heading narrows the given results to even narrower results to have more in depth results withing the keyword used for the starting search.

a. What is Delicious?

-Delicious is a web tool used to save/bookmark web pages that one wants to save or have handy.
b. What is the advantage of this Web 2.0 tool?

- The advantage of this web tool is that one can open the files/web pages from any computer unlike the bookmark tool on ones personal computer. The web pages are available from any computer not just ones personal computer like the bookmark tool.

c. Do you think you might use it? If so, why? If not, why not?

- I think in the long run I will use it being that I am a sociology major there is plenty of research done. I want to have any and every web page I need handy no matter where I am or what I am doing.

1. How did you evaluate your results?

I used the C.A.R.D.I.O method by using currency, authority, relevance, depth, information type and objectivity.

b. What conclusions did you draw about the different search engines? Consider

a. what was the same?

-All the search engines offered among the same categories and types of searches. They all offered web pages or visuals.

b. what was different?

-The main difference between the search engines was that google as well as yahoo gave the most amount of different web pages and or results.

C. Differences in numbers of results

- The numbers were quite different for each search engine though, yahoo gave the most results. The largest result was 94,900, as stated, given by yahoo.com

3. Why do you think the search engines behaved as they did?

- I think the search engines behaved as they did because this time around I used more specific search methods therefore it gave me more accurate and useful information. I did not get as much unwanted web pages.

5. What other questions came into your mind as you carried out this exercise?

- Does ethnocentrism lead to socialization?, Why is ethnocentrism an important factor in sociology?

- I used two different phrases to search my topic:

The biggest set of results was given by google. My guess that google has more results is because google is a more common search engine and most webpages that want to publish their websites give their information to those search engines that are being used the most.

4)What questions did you use to evaluate your results?

Credibility- Who published the web page?

The publisher is Franz Oppenheimer.

Context- Is new research being reported or is the author reviewing previously conducted research?

In my opinion he is giving his views on how sociology came about and a topic like this is not very clear. Many sociologist have different meanings to sociology history or its creation.


Commercialism- Are there any hidden cost?

For this article there was no hidden cost nor did it as me to insert any personal information.

Accuracy- How is the information presented?

The information was presented as more of an opinion based answer. The article seemed very reliable and there was plenty of resources that proved the statements presented.

4b) What conclusion did you draw about the value of the site and why?

Overall I believed that this article was mostly credible. The publisher cites most of his ideas and therefore it proves that its true. There were a few parts of the article where there was no citation. Though there was a publisher of the article I am not sure if that publisher really write all the information given.

5) Having conducted this research activity, what questions came into your mind that you could use to continue your exploration? (1 point)

As i conducted the research activity one question that came into my mind was "Is there a specif history behind sociology or is it just different opinions?" then, "How long has sociology been around?".

There were a number of concepts presented this week.

1. Which did you know already?

I had previously learned about boolean operators in my communications class this past quarter. I knew also that one had to insert phrases not sentences.

b. Which were new to you?
There were a few new concepts that were not new to me but not as clear. I knew about credibility on webpages but I did not know it much in depth as now. For example I did not know all the questions that have to be asked before one relies on the webpage. Now I know that one has to evaluate the web resources and answer the questions step by step.
